Back Why is validating Light Rail tickets mandatory?

CityPass operates according to State Regulations on enforcement issues, and accordingly, to the law stating that purchasing and validating tickets is mandatory.

 

The Light Rail is the first means of transportation in Israel operated by an “open system”, based on trust: passengers are requested to pay and validate their tickets independently, without the interference of a gate or driver.

 

The instruction to validate tickets is related to the system’s policy, as set by Ministry of Transportation, in order to implement the current “open system” through CityPass and expand further “open” transportation systems throughout Israel in the future.

 

Mandatory validation was determined by the Ministry of Transportation in order to permit the existence of a combined public transportation system of all operators and to grant passage for travelers between different means of transportation within 90 minutes of the first validation time stamp. Without validation, it will not be possible to maintain this system, which is beneficial for all passengers.

Back Which tickets must be validated?

According to the law and according to Ministry of Transportation regulations, passengers must validate tickets on all Light Rail rides immediately upon boarding - including transfers from a bus to the Light Rail, and also when transferring between trains; this includes when cards are loaded with periodic or special contracts.

 

Each and every type of ticket must be validated: paper tickets, stored value contracts, multiple trip tickets, and all kinds of periodical passes: monthly, weekly, daily, student passes, etc.

Back I have validated the ticket, what should I do with it?

Passengers must retain their traveling tickets, along with any kind of ticket, until leaving the destination stop in preparation to show them to a Light Rail inspector.

Back How do I validate a single-use paper ticket?

While taking a single trip using a single-use paper ticket, validation is performed by inserting it (following their arrow’s direction) to the relevant slot in the validation machine upon boarding the Light Rail. You must ensure the date and the time of validation are printed on the back of the ticket.

Back How do I validate a Rav-Kav card?

Rav-Kav cards must be validated, regardless of the type of contract loaded on the card – including periodic contracts like daily, weekly, monthly, semester, and annual passes, or “stored value” traveling contracts. 

 

To validate a Rav-Kav card, place the Rav-Kav card in the center of the validation machine. When validation is successful, a green light appears, the machine beeps, and a message appears on the screen to confirm that the ticket was validated.

Back I have a special fee-free contract on my Rav-Kav, do I need to validate the card?

Yes. The Rav-Kav card must be validated, regardless the type of contract charged on the card. Even special travel fee-free contracts such as: Shalat (Non-Paid Service), Kadaz (Pre-Military Course), National Service, and Service Year contract-holders must validate their personal cards upon every entrance to the rail.

Back I have a Monthly pass, do I need to validate it in every ride?

Yes. Every Rav-Kav ticket must be validated regardless the type of contract charged. This includes periodical contracts stored on the Rav-Kav, including daily, weekly, monthly, semester, and annual passes, or “stored value” traveling contracts.

Back Can I validate the same ticket for several passengers?

This is possible only if you began a multi-passenger bus ride with a Rav-Kav; you may continue your ride on the Light Rail with the same passengers only. You must validate the tickets for every passenger.

 

In all other situations, validation at the beginning of the Light Rail trip will be permitted for one passenger only.

Back What is the Increased charge?

The increased charge is a demand for full ticket penalty payment, which is required for passengers traveling via the Light Rail or getting off at a stop without a valid ride ticket – or for those passengers who did not validate a purchased ticket. Simply purchasing a ticket is insufficient; according to the law and Ministry of Transportation regulations, every ticket must be validated immediately upon boarding the train.

Unpaid increased charge demands will lead to additional charges of interest, linkage, etc. Unpaid debts will be charged by writ of execution.

Light Rail is a common form of public transportation found throughout the world, but is relatively new to Israel.

At this time, Jerusalem, the capital and the largest city in Israel, is privileged to be the first and only city where the Light Rail operates in Israel.

Back How many passengers use the Light Rail?

About 145,000 passengers use the Rail on a daily basis and about 40 million passengers use the Rail annually.

Back How many people may travel on the Light Rail?

Every train can carry up to 500 passengers, equal to 10 buses. This large capacity was made possible as most of its internal surface is intended for those who travel while standing. This planning concept is based on relatively short urban rides. 112 permanent seats were also allocated, with priority given to the elderly. 16 folding seats are also designated for passengers with limited mobility.

Back Does the Light Rail take priority at traffic lights?

Yes, and this is one of its advantages. The Light Rail in Jerusalem is the first public transportation system in Israel that is prioritized by traffic lights, permitting a smooth ride. As such, all travel times are knowable in advance.

Electronic information screens located at Light Rail stations provide real-time information about forthcoming Light Rail train arrivals. You can also find useful electronic information inside the carriages, conveniently provided in three different languages.

Back What is the contribution of the Light Rail to the quality of life and surrounding environment?

Thanks to the Light Rail, heavy traffic on the roads has been reduced and quality of life and surrounding environment has been significantly improved. The Light Rail’s engines are silent and permit a quiet ride, hence the Rail doesn’t cause noise disturbances. As a result of Light Rail use, the air pollution level has reduced on Yafo Street by 70 percent! In the past, Yafo (Jaffa) Street was full of cars and polluted from exhaust smoke; currently the street has become a modern city centre that is quiet, flourishing, and full of life. As part of the city centre revival vision, the first line was planned in order to provide easy and available access to the innovative and developing city centre.

 

Yafo Street is the main axis for this plan and it has changed completely: the street is now a nice and quiet pedestrian pathway, which only permits passage to pedestrians and the Light Rail.

Light Rail development has brought prosperity and real estate businesses in the city have flourished; cultural centres and attractions have grown through accessibility from big neighbourhoods, such as Pisgat Ze’ev, Bait ve-Gan, Beit ha-Kerem, Beit Hanina, Shuafat, French Hill etc. to the city centre. Full accessibility has  given new life to businesses and destinations along the Light Rail’s path, reaching extended areas and making the journey into the city comfortable, quick, and easy.

Back Is the Light Rail accessible to passengers with limited mobility?

Of course. This is one of the aspects we are particularly proud of.  One of the most prominent advantages of the Light Rail is how it grants full accessibility to passengers with various limitations. In order to provide help and assistance to passengers with limited mobility, the Light Rail was planned with accessibility consultants in order to facilitate a pleasant travel experience for all passengers.

 

The Light Rail allows, for the first time in Israel, full accessibility to everybody. The platform level is precisely adjusted to the vehicle floor level and therefore enables easy, quick, and convenient entrance and exit to the Light Rail. This enables smooth passage for wheelchairs, as well for parents with baby pushchairs

Back Where may I purchase a ticket for the Light Rail?

You can purchase paper tickets for a single ride on the Light Rail only. You can purchase these tickets from any of the automatic vending machines located at Light Rail stations and the CityPass Service Center, located in the front of the Klal building.

 

You can charge your Rav-Kav in the automatic vending machines located in stations, the CityPass Service Centre, with bus drivers, or on the ‘’Rav-Kav online’’ website.

 

NOTE: for a Light Rail pass, you must purchase your ticket in advance. You will not be able to purchase a ticket onboard the train.

 

According to the law and Ministry of Transport regulations, every ticket must be validated immediately upon boarding the train, for each and every Light Rail trip.

Back What is the validity of a single-trip paper ticket?

Paper tickets for a single ride on the Light Rail permits a single Rail trip without transfers to the train or bus; these passes are not subject to discounts (e.g. youth, students, senior citizens, etc.).

 

Single-trip paper tickets aren’t limited to the purchase date and are valid for three years from the date of purchase.

 

Passengers using single-trip paper tickets are requested to validate their tickets immediately upon boarding the Rail to ensure the date and the hour are printed on the back of the ticket; passengers must retain their tickets until leaving their destination stop, in preparation to show it to a Light Rail inspector for verification.

 

Single-trip paper tickets purchased on buses are not valid for a Light Rail ride.

Back How does a Rav-Kav ride operate?

You may charge your Rav-Kav in the automatic vending machines located at every Light Rail platform, at the CityPass Service Center, with bus drivers, or on the “Rav-Kav online” website.

 

Every ticket type charged to the Rav-Kav permits free journeys on the Light Rail and buses located in Jerusalem within a time frame of 90 minutes from the first validation time stamp. REMEMBER: It is mandatory to validate the ticket each time you board the train, in addition to when transferring from bus to train and when transferring between trains. This includes when the card is loaded with periodical or special contracts.

Back May I ride the Light Rail by using the stored value arrangement?

It is possible to ride the Light Rail using the stored value arrangement. This arrangement is also used for travel that starts on bus and continues on Light Rails, as well as for trips that start with Light Rail. Passengers may load a stored value contract on their Rav-Kav via a bus driver or the “Rav-Kav online” website. Passengers cannot load stored value contracts at the Light Rail stations.

 

The discounts given when loading stored value contracts for the Light Rail are identical to the discount percentages given when purchasing multiple trip tickets; this depends on an updated rider profile on the Rav-Kav card itself.

Back How do I get a Rav-Kav card that gives me discounts according to my eligibility?

According to Ministry of Transportation regulations, receiving discounts on Light Rail ticket purchases is possible only with a personal Rav-Kav card that was issued with the appropriate discount profile. In order to receive the discount profile for Rav-Kav cards that have already been issued, passengers must go to a CityPass Service Center (or any other carrier service center) with an identification card and the relevant documents – student cards, social security or “bituach leumi” certificates, etc., according to the requested profile type.

Back I am currently in unpaid military service/pre-military service/national service/service year, am I obligated to validate my Rav-Kav for the Light Rail?

A solider in unpaid military service, a cadet in pre-military program, a cadet in a half-year pre-military program, a volunteer in the national service, and a volunteer in service year are eligible to travel for free; they are obligated, however, to validate their Rav-Kav cards upon boarding the Light Rail train.

 

In order to update the Rav-Kav profiles, passengers must approach the carrier that issued the Rav-Kav card, change their Rav-Kav to the appropriate profile and load their Rav-Kav with the special contract. Those eligible who don’t own a Rav-Kav card yet may go into a CityPass Service Centre or any other carrier service centres to receive a free Rav-Kav card and load it with the special travel contract.

 

For clarification: unpaid military service, pre-military programs, national service, and service year volunteers are obligated to validate their Rav-Kav card for every trip, upon boarding the Light Rail.

Back From when and until when may I load a monthly pass contract?

Monthly pass contracts can be loaded beginning on the 20th day of the previous month, until the 10th day of the contract month. The contract period begins at the start of the calendar month.

Back Do I need a Rav-Kav card for children under five years of age?

One child under 5 year old, travelling with a paying passenger is exempt from paying – passengers must buy a ticket for every additional child before boarding the train.

Back How long is the Light Rail route?

The Red Line of the Light Rail in Jerusalem, the first in the country, travels through the heart of the city and connects neighborhoods to the city center. The current Light Rail line is 13.8 kilometers long and connects various areas in the capital of Israel – this makes travel accessible for all populations in the city.

Back From where to where does the Light Rail run?

The Light Rail line begins at Mount Herzl station, near the neighborhood of Bait ve-Gan, the National Cemetery, and the Yad Vashem museum. From there, it continues on Herzl Boulevard and travels up onto the Suspension Bridge (Gesher HaMeitarim) that stretches over the main city entrance; the bridge was built specially to enable the Light Rail to pass above the street-level and its numerous transportation lanes. The line continues down to Yafo Street and passes through the Central Bus Station and the colorful Mahane Yehuda market. From there, it continues to the Yafo pedestrian street, which was built for Light Rail and city center pedestrian use; it reaches to the Municipality Building station next to Safra Square, from which passengers may access the Old City and Mamila.

 

From the Municipality Building station, the line continues through Tzahal Square to Damascus Gate, to the hotels on Route 1, to Ammunition Hill, and French Hill junction. The line enters the Beit Hanina and Shuafat neighborhoods, and from there into Pisgat Ze’ev. The line ends near Hel Ha’Avir street in Pisgat Ze’ev, near to Neve Ya’akov.
